This orchid was found at a cut downed tree on 18 March 2006, when I went to orchid searching in a small jungle between Batu Kawa and Bau area in Kuching, Borneo Island. The leaves of this orchid is about 2 cm and it is starting to flower. It has yellow flowers. It looks like Phaleonopsis, but it is too small for that size. Please help to identify. Please contact me at ycwee@yahoo.com or tel: +60162808170

On 29 March, I have taken some of the pictures again. I planted it at my Bonsai tree. The flower bud is still not opened yet, though it has been 11 days. I uploaded to a webpage. Please take a look. Thanks

Hi Yin Chuun,
Well done for rescueing the orchid. It looks likely to be a Thrixspermum. Would appreciate a good close-up with measurements and description, when the flowers open. Your other orchid is probably a Coelogyne.

Default Thrixspermum sp.

Very pretty flower! But I'm afraid that the genus Thrixspermum is the closest I can get to.

As you will have found, the genus sport tiny sequential flowers (one at a time) which last for half a day.

This makes them difficult to find and study, and there is not a great deal of interest around. Sorry.

OMG! Its really small! And really nice. Thanks for posting pics. Maybe you know or can find someone who can help you ID it? Its hard to do with just a picture.

We are planning for another trip this weekend to the same area. Maybe find more specimens. I personally feel that this is a important rescue activity because the locations we went to are all earmarked for commercial development.
One very interesting find was a HUGE colony of Cymbidium finlaysonianum... Just to give you a rough idea, the diameter of the trunk of the tree that was felled was around 1 metre. This colony of C. finlaysonianum was growing the whole circumference of the tree, at at covering a total trunk length of around 1.5 - 2 metres. Unfortunately, we could only collect so many...
Apart from the possible Thrixspermum(?), we found other genus as well, namely Dendrobriums, Bulbophyllums and maybe some Renantheras. We can only confirm the exact species when they flower. Will take some pictures this time. Hopefully weather will permit.
