The liner is quite thin and the roots would be able to push through it if they wanted to. It's the type that some people use for stanhopea's and the flowers push through the liner on their way down. Compared with it being in the pot it will drain much quicker, I'm just worried it might dry out too quick. Where I have hung it it will get a lot of air movement and more light. Tomorrow I might take a couple of pics of how it is and where it is now. It's 10.30pm on Sunday night here in Western Oz. Marion

Could my orchid be an aerides? The leaves are the same as on this plant. Alternate strap leaves with a dimple in the end and thick aerial roots?

Aerides is in the vandaceous alliance. Its growth habit is very similar to a 'true' vanda. You'll get closer to identifying your plant when it flowers. Typically, aerides has a spur at the base of the lip, flowers are smaller and more cupped than vanda.

PS - your plant could also be a hybrid - vanda to vanda, ascocentrum to vanda (ascocenda) or even aerides to vanda (aeridovanda) The only way to know for sure is through dna testing.
Is the grower from whom you got the plant available? If so, see if they have any info, photos of the plant.

Thanks cneos, I'm hoping that now I have changed it's set-up it will reward me with blooms. I've had it at least 4 years, I don't even remember if it was in bloom when I bought it........that's how bad I was back then. LOL

Although I am quite sure that the plant is Vandaceous I disagree that it is a Vanda. It looks almost exactly like a Aerides lawrenceana that I have. Although pictures can get you into trouble the leaves look to wide for a Vanda even the strap leaved ones. How wide are the leaves? As to culture I agree with the other statements on that,

The leaves are at their widest about 2 inches. They are also sort of corrigated. Very thick and tough.

The leaves look too wide to be a straight strap leaf Vanda. It almost looks like it has some aerides or Rhynchostylis mixed in. Most strap leaved vandas have leaves that are at most 3/4-1 inch across. Yours in the photo look a lot wider than that.

i've just come in from having a good look at it and it looks good. It has new aerial roots that are actively growing. It's nice and light and breezy where it is now but it's still under shadecloth so it shouldn't burn. Do the vand alliance flower at a particular time of year? I'm just wondering when I could expect it to flower if it's happier with it's new home? Marion
