Orchids From Ikea Female
Default Orchids From Ikea

Hi Everyone.

I bought two orchids from Ikea in the summer, two semi-circular pots in one
(|) = Some thing like this.

On the plant pot it is labelled Pahpiopedilum, are they paph's or slipper orchids (or are they the same?)?

WHen i bought them they were in bloom, but the flowers died off fairly quickly (within a month or so). I have one with a white head (top part of flower) and one with a purple head. I have attached a picture of the type they are which i found on google.

Can anyone specify what type they are?

And if possible when and with what i should re-pot them?

Thanks a million

Sam

They are beautiful. Paphs are a type of slipper orchid.

The one on the left looks like Paphiopedilum sukhakulii.

Not sure about the one on the right.

the picture you found shows two Maudiae type Paph hybrids. it will be impossible identify them, since these hybrids all look very similar to each other.

I recognize that picture from the Paramount Orchids website!

Yes, they are Maudiae type hybrids, and as Kip said, they are pretty much impossible to identify because there are thousands of them and they all look very similar!

Paphiopedilum is a genus of slipper orchids. So, a Paph is a slipper orchid, but a slipper orchid is not necessarily a Paph! The other slipper genera are Cypripedium, Phragmipedium, Mexipedium, and Selenipedium.

Thanks for the replies.

I was wondering if anyone could provide advice?

As i said they have flowered now and new baby plants are growing out the sides of the original plants. i think i should re-pot them as the medium has become a bit dense and seems to stay moist for a while.

Any ideas of what you find the best for this type of Maudiae type hybrid should be repotted in. I am keeping them inside in a south-west facing room several feet from the window as its very bright in there.

I find that a fine grade bark mix with perlite, charcoal, and sphagnum or peat added works well. Coir is also a common medium. Everyone has their own mixes, which are developed based on their own conditions. The best way to start out is to use a simple mix that is easy to make, and experiment. You find what works best with experience.

I have two similar garden centre paphs which I grow in fine bark, on a pebble tray, watering when dry (about every ten days, more if very dry/warm) feeding with Chempak orchid food (yellow tub) every other feed in spring & summer, monthly in winter, about two feet away from an east window (no direct sunshine). They seem very happy as they have reflowered. Hope this helps

My two Maudiae Paphs came in those semi-circular pots. I bought them as one plant but wasn't disapointed when I got two in one because both were in flower.

Anyway I agree with what you've been told above. I repoted mine in a mixture of fine grade bark, medium grade CHC (Cocunut Husk Chip) and perlite and they seem to be doing well.

The new growths seem to mature really slowly on paphs so you will need to be patient on those.

Mine are in a South-West window.
