Possible Vanda
Hi folks.
A rather striking spike is opening up at the moment. It looks kind of like a Vanda - the roots and growth form mainly - but I'm not all that sure what it is.
Any ideas? Oh, it's about 3 feet tall and it gets much larger. It was a gifted piece off a huge plant that was growing up (and down, and all over) a large tree. They didn't know the name of it but hey - of the 200 orchids I bought off them, they didn't know the names for most of them.
I'm guessing it's a hybrid, but it is pretty distinctive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Aus.

The flowers remind me of something I've seen which was Vanda alliance but not actually a Vanda.
Can't find it just now though.

Actually this is the one I was thinking of. It's a different colour but it was the flower shape that reminded me of this.
Mokara Jasso's Pride
This was posted in the cattleya alliance but I thought Mokara was a vanda alliance. I could be wrong though.

This flower happens to be a Renanthera. I not sure if its a species or hybrid, too hard to tell.

Thank you all for your assistance. I had never even heard of Renanthera until reading this thread. At least it explains why I was having so much trouble with my mental process which kept going along the lines:
"is it a Vanda? No, it's leaves are wrong. But it CAN'T be a Dendrobium...can it? The flowers, the growth form...hmmm...no, probably a Vanda. Maybe..."
As for real Vandas, I have 5 unknown plants with unopened spikes at the moment and can't wait to see what they look like in another week or two. You'll be hearing from me in due course ;-)
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Aus.

Just letting you know, I've attempted to pollinate this (x self). Will see if any pods set and flask them up. Good fun, regardless of the outcome. I've had some success with my early flasking attempts (after over a year I noticed tiny babies in several bottles and was duly stoked) and will have to see what happens. Still, it'll be years before I see how the flowers any surviving offspring look.
And I'll try and remember to take a pic when the flowers are fully open and post it in this thread.
Cheers,
Aus.
