Well, here's a better picture of where the spikes come from. It emerged from the bulb just below the leaves. I'm afraid I won't have any pictures of the blooms until next year. I received the plant last week, right now it doesn't show any new growth, and it's close to the beginning of the cool dry season. which is our equivalent of winter. Still, some of the plants I'm sure of as dendrobiums are putting out new growth, so maybe it won't take that long to bloom. My nephew-in-law commented that the blooms are white, but I don't think that helps us much and I'm not sure how much to trust his powers of observation anyway.

But this is really exciting. I looked up some Eria and Epigeneium species and they're very attractive.

Here's the thumbnail of the detail:

I vote for Dendrobium, it doesn't look that much different to my lindleyi......although much bigger.

Dendrobium is one of the largest genera in the orchid world. You'd be surprised on how many different kind of bulbs size and shape there are. From the bulb that can reach a stout 6 ft tall sutiknoi, 6 ft long pendulous bulbs anosmum, sawtooth bulbs, needle-leaved caronii, and many more.

I think the shape of the bulb in the picture is likely fall to Dendrobium latourea section. Just wait and hope it will present with gorgeous flowers.

I've been coming to realize that as I find more information sources on the Web.

Yes, my nephew tells me the flowers are spectacular. Thanks for the suggestion. Oddly, I don't find latourea in the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia (guess I
should just use the abbreviation IOSPE), but I did find a couple of other references. I didn't find a picture of the bulbs, though, and the articles I did find say they are native to Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands -- it's not impossible one could have found its way to the wild here in Thailand, but seems kind of improbable. I like the flowers in the pictures I've seen, though; very unusual.

Well, it looks right now like I will have to wait at least several months until it blooms. At the moment it's just sitting there like a lox.

And thank you for your web page. You've given names for some pictures that look very much like some of my flowers. One which just finished blooming (it's in terrible shape, but still produced seven blossoms) is apparently a Mokara Christine Pannee. Since it's a hybrid I thought I would never identiry it, but now I know.
