wow... interesting Catasetum... I would say it is either a very good, or better said, an excellent Catasetum saccatum (I go for this ) or its hybrid with one in the barbatum group (this because the hairs in the labellum are quite large, which is not common, but not improbable in Ctsm saccatum)

let's see what Bruno de Toni, Isurus79, Gena or any of the other Catasetinae enthusiasts can add here...

Where did you get it from?

I beleive I got this at the WOC in Miami but can not remember from who and I lost the tag or a blue jay took it. It bloomed last year, which is the photo you see, and spiking now.

I am very bad with identification and really had no idea it was a Catasetum. I thought it might be a Bulbophyllum of some sort.

uhhiiissss... you better treat it like it is.. a wonderfull Catasetum, and not as a bulbo, or you will loose it before you can imagine it

Thanks and now I'm nervous. Am I correct in assuming this is a Catasetum Expansum?

I am just now starting to use this site and need to familiarize myself with it because there appears to be Wealth of information in here.

Don't be nervous Catasetum are actually quite easy to grow You only need to understand tehir needs, and give them a good rest during winter (no water, no fertilizer, no anything!) until they re-start growing. They loose the leave during this time so don't panic. Check this CULTURE OF CATASETINAE

as for the picture posted... I am almost sure this is an Hybrid. It indeed has Catasetum expansum in the background, but there is something in the labellum which does not match... and I cannot say what it is... I cannot say which hybrid this is... Maybe others will disagree in this case... Maybe someone with more experience with expansum could also add his/her point of view here...

I agree with Ramon it could be a hybrid or a very unusual saccatum, but any way I have to check Holst book to see if he describes a saccatum variety with a hairy lip.

Actually, in Holst's Book (The World of Catasetum), the plate 69 (From Sertum Orchidaceum) shows one quite similar to this.. however, the phozp on plate 70 shows a more common Ctsm. saccatum... also if you search in google pics, you will find some similars to the one shown here by Mantis...

Yeap, I saw the same plate and it looks very much alike.
