Need help identifying phal and oncidium, my second attempt at orchids
Default Need help identifying phal and oncidium, my second attempt at orchids

I picked up these two orchids recently on clearance at a local supermarket. This is my second attempt at orchids after I killed a really nice phal from most likely underwatering it. The oncidium was $12.99 and the phal $6.99, which I was very happy with.

I'm planning on keeping the oncidium either by a south facing window behind mini-blinds that diffuse the light, or a west facing window over the sink in the kitchen. That window is partially shaded, but you can see the sun through it for about two hours in the evening and the light isn't as intense. Any suggestions?

The phal is pretty small. The pot is just under 5" and the flowers are about 2" across. I would like to keep this one by our front door, but this might not provide enough light (this is where my other one died). An alternative to this is an east facing window, also behind mini-blinds to diffuse the light.

Thanks for any help! Our local Lowes also has orchids on clearance right now and I'm tempted to go buy some more!

Nevermind about the oncidium, I feel dumb. I was looking through the tags and it actually was labeled. It is Mtssa. Shelob 'Webmaster'.

The phal's tag is harder to read. All I can make out is _____ Stone Dance(?)

Any tips on the growing locations would still be appreciated.

Updated: Here is a pic of the phal's tag.

Phal. Stone Dance =- Su-An Cricket x equestris. equestris is used a lot in today's miniature, multifloral phals. Looks like you got two nice plants.

What's the Phal potted in? What do the roots look like (not just on the top - everything)?

I noticed the plants are also double potted. Do they have drain holes?

Here's a shot of the phal's potting medium. It looks like mostly bark with a little moss mixed in.

Both are double potted. The oncidium's inner pot sits about an inch above the bottom of the outer pot. The phal's inner pot sits flush against the bottonm of the outer pot. Both inner and outer pots have drain holes.

The phal's roots look pretty good to me. The inner pot is translucent so you can see the roots below. They all look thick and firm with a nice silver/green color.

I'm guessing this mini-phal will keep it's small size? Any chance it will throw out a second inflorescence next cycle?

Edit: On a happy note, the leaves have perked up some after the first watering. As my first phal was dying, the leaves got thin and flimsy. I watered it once a week, as recommended, but that was not enough given the pot and potting medium I put it in. I am paying better attention this time.

If the potting medium is old, I suggest changing it out.

Other than that, everything else about the plant appears to be fine.

Phals grow in bright shade not deep shade where there's no light at all. Think shaded porch.

Mini Phals do keep their small size.
