NOIDs, Look-Alikes and Mistaken Identity
Tom's NOID phalaenopsis may 'look identical' to Juli's Phal. Brother John but until testing confirms that the parents of Tom's plant are Phal. Brother Delight and Phal Brother Brungor, it should remain a NOID. A beautifully grown Phal. NOID Pink can give its grower as much enjoyment as validly identified named plants. Even though a NOID it isn't able to earn an AOS award, it can still win a ribbon or two in its lifetime.
When it comes to naming your NOIDS, a hybridizer once said that I 'look identical' to Jack the Ripper, so that's what I'll call you from now on. I got the point when he wrote up an order for 'Jack the Ripper.'
There's a great article on the OB by Piper, Orchid Naming for Dummies. I suggest that anyone with NOIDs reads it.
