Help Identify
Default Help Identify

I received this orchid as a gift - no identification. I have it in a sunny western facing window. Water it weekly - it remains moist. I see a few new leaves sprouting - see the bottom right corner of the photo. However it is very slow growing and does not seem to be making much progress. Can you help identify - and also provide tips on how to get this guy motivated?

Hello jmcnyc and welcome to the Orchid Board.
Your plant is a cattleya, without a tag and bloom that's about all the ID I can make.
Does your pot have drainage holes? I see that moss you have it planted in looks pretty wet. Cattleya roots need air circulation and do not like to stay wet. Your pbulbs don't look very plump, have you checked the roots lately?

I thought dendrobium as soon as I saw it, but like Zoi2 says with out flowers hard to say. I'd not water it until it gets more on the dry side myself.

I second the cattleya id. As stated, hard to identify close or exactly without blooms.

Looks like a cattleya to me and I would make same remarks as Zoi2 concerning the medium etc...

it is a cattleya of some sort, and needs more air around the roots, hoping it has roots.....get that pretty and fatal moss off the roots and let it dry out...probably a good idea to repot...

If you unpot, I think you'll find two separate plants - tall pseudobulbs look like a bifoliate cattleya; short, round pseudobulbs with leaves may be dendrobium.

Examine roots of both plants then repot the two plants (separately) in fresh medium.

Catts can be grown in loosely packed moss if the pot is well aerated and the medium is allowed to dry out between waterings.
