thought i had a noid.. Female
Default thought i had a noid..

went to lowes today .. and found in thier bargain bin orchids and i found a phalaeonopsis in a squarish open basket (almost like you have hanging plants in open to air and all) with a coconut fiber liner and packed with a ton of spag..
i get it cheap.. bring it home.. thinking its a noid but thats ok.. as i didnt see a tag anywhere.. well i take it out to get rid of most of the spag. and buried deep near the roots is its tag.. yay.. i did put it back in the basket surrounded by orchid bark.. its roots looked good.. and it looked like at one time it was in a pot.. so i didnt disturb the small amount of loose spag there nor the 3 pieces of styro. as the roots looked good no dead stuff.. i did cut 3 dead spots off near the top. but the packed till its eyeballs poped spag i tossed..
now.. the tag.. i dont know if it is the name of the phal. or if its just the name of the parents.. but here it is..
as written on the tag
6/10/07
DO417 P. Brother Purple x DTPS. (Leopard Prince - Formosa Rose)
anyone have its like? or know what flower it has or if it was registerd as a certain name? would appreciate any help to put a face to this chid.

That looks like the name of the parents although it seems to be written slightly strangely and I've no idea if the cross has been registered in it's own right. It's not a NOID though if you know the parents.

Phalenopsis Brother Purple is one of the parents. That is itself a cross between Phal. Golden Peoker and Phal. Brother Glamour.

The other is a Doritaenopsis. This genus is in its self an integeneric hybrid of Doritas & Phalenopsis. I THINK that the 'Leopard Prince - Formosa Rose' should have been written as 'Leopard Prince x Formosa Rose'. This would indicate that the second parent is itself a cross between 'DTPS Leopard Prince' and 'DTPS Formosa Rose'

Sue here on OB posted a pic of 'DTPS Leopard Prince' in the past.

Dtps Leopard Prince

I've found lots of references to 'DTPS. Formosa Rose' as a parent in other hybrids but nothing about it on it's own.

I THINK that because your 'chid contains both Doritaenopsis and Phalenopsis it is classed as a Doritaenopsis overall.

Great news about your buds. I've got two Phals with buds forming just now and it's so exciting I look at them every day to see how they are getting on and I can't wait

Phal Brother Purple x Dtps. Leopard Prince is registered as Dtps. Nobby's King David.
'Formosa Rose' may be the clonal name of the Dtps. Leopard Prince parent.
When you know the 'grex' names of the parents, you can look up at RHS to see if the cross has been registered and find that name. And if you only know the 'grex' name, RHS can give you the parents. RHS and Sanders list is the authority for registered hybrid names. (Clonal names aren't generally included in the database.)

You can refer to the RHS to find 'registered' names
