any idea what type of dendrobium is this? it's a gift from my uncle who bought it because of the very pretty flower....

Yeah peloric - see how the two higher inner petals resemble the lip? That is really awesome, I would have bought that too! Nice find!!

I think this is variety of Dendrobium Anucha Flare. I think it has a complex background and peloric influence, but I am not sure. I have seen a few crosses in Thailand that use odd combinations, such as crossing Den Phalaenopsis types with species like Den. Pulchellum resulting in odd flowers
