That's it exactly. The dead giveaways were the light speckles and the fact that it seems to be an easily available hybrid at nurseries.

I looked up the parentage on the RHS site. Registered in 1984.

Seed Parent
Vanda Bangkapi

Pollen Parent
Ascocenda Pralor

Kewl...thanks everyone for playing "Name that NOID"

Very good guess Roy. This was a fun and practical game. Certainly helped me brush up on using RHS database.

Melissa, where did you buy your Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty? Is there a clonal name for your plant? When you buy a plant, the clonal name is important as it may distinguish plants grown from seed from plants that are mericlones.

When plants are seed-grown, the offspring vary considerably from each other - literally, no two siblings are (exactly) alike. With a mericlone, the 'baby' is the exact duplicate of the 'parent' plant.

Things get complicated when plants are judged and awarded.

If a plant is grown from seed, the exhibitor has the right to give his newly awarded plant a clonal name that stays with that plant (and any mericlones made from it) forever.

An example: you take your Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty to a judging center where it receives an HCC award, you could give it a clonal name - 'Roy's Best Guess' Your plant (and any of its mericloned offspring) would be forever known as Ascda, Su-Fun Beauty 'Roy's Best Guess' HCC/AOS. Awards can go higher (AM, AOS) but root name stays the same.

Incidentally, there are 4 AOS awards, most recent being in 2004 to Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty 'Home Depot' HCC/AOS. I suspect that you have the clone 'Orange Belle' which has been widely distributed in nurseries and big box stores since the mid to late 90's.

This is more info than anyone 'asked' for but hopefully clears up some mystery surrounding orchids' names.

I would lay money that mine is the clone 'Orange Belle' as I got it at a local specialty nursery that does NOT specialize in Orchids though they carry some interesting types sometimes.

So...here is the $50 question..can I show it and if I do should I give it the clonal name if I am 90% sure that is what it is?

Not that it is so important, but it would be fun to take some to a show (if they would cooperate and bloom at the right time)

If you are confident that yours is the mericlone Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty 'Orange Belle' AM/AOS (the highest award to date), you can label it, display it at shows and have it AOS-judged with that name. But you can't give it a new clonal name. That privilege is reserved for seed propagated plants.

Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty 'Orange Belle' was awarded an AM (81 points) in August 1991. Natural spread of the flowers was 5.5; full description of award is: Twenty flowers on one inflorescence presented well above foliage; sepals and petals bright orange, spotted and striated darker orange; lip bright red-orange; callus yellow with deep red mark.

If your plant exceeds the standards of the 1991 award, it could receive a higher point AM (or even an FCC). Whether a plant receives an award or not, the discussion by the judges is always educational (and entertaining). Give it a shot - put it in show where there is AOS judging or bring it to your regional AOS Judging Center. (The Atlanta Judging Center may be closest to you.)

Good luck and keep growing!
