To me it looks like we call "Long Tal Narlie" or in english, you'd call it a slipper orchid..... I now have four that are native to Thailand.

NB kaempferia is also called sand ginger. it has a thick tuber root, not roots like other orchids, can you have a look and let us know which it is?
see in this page, look at the image of the root http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galangal

thanks

The galangal that grows in Thailand has long stems. It is used widely in many dishes here.

Hi Everyone

I havent have a lot of time lately to take more pics. I will try in the next few days to get some better ones.

I will pull one of the plants up and take pics of the root system too.

I now have a microscope, so I will check the flowers. It seems to have an orchid like pollen mass and not like regular flowers. But as it is tiny I will need to use the microscope to be completely sure.

I will try to post in the coming two or three days as it should flower again by then. It puts out new flowers every few days, one at a time.

Brett

Hi Peter

Sorry, I misunderstood the first post perhaps. Slipper orchids always register as Paphs & Phrags etc to me.. I am going to try to get a better pic on the weekend of the flower/roots for other posters here.

Do you know a botanical name for this species? I have tried to pollinate it, with no luck so far. It flowers every few days and seems to like it cool. Extremely short lived, a matter of half a day at peak condition and then it is on the way out.
