I'm gonna have to say for sure this is a corn snake. They are harmless, as in not poisonous. The potential for being bitten is always there! Even with my own pet corn snakes!

I think you are right. We went browsing around and apparently it is a juvenile rat snake (when they are born, reported they are 9-11 inches.....
). I do have to say, the animal did give me a startle! We have a "green space" behind our home that carries a creek which meanders down to the Brazos river. I have gotten used to critters, but not quite so close and in my favorite spot in the world!! I figure, like WhiteRabbit says, I will be watching where I put my hand. Repotting is going to take on a whole new aspect, this spring!! Thanks for all of your responses!
