Exclamation S/he surprised me while I was watering...what kind?

I thought the cork looked a little funny on my B. nodosa..and then, it moved and flicked it's tongue. Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

That very much looks like a corn/rat snake. I don't want to say for certain. Sure does look like one though! I saw a snake just like this hiking yesterday.

I'm gonna have to say for sure this is a corn snake. They are harmless, as in not poisonous. The potential for being bitten is always there! Even with my own pet corn snakes!

Yikes! that would give you a surprise for sure!
tho I do think thats really cool - I like snakes and if the snake is hanging around is proly cos there is a food supply for him so can't be a bad thing.

just have a look over things before sticking your hand in lol

Think that's bad? I was pulling some weeds recently and came about 1 inch from grabbing a Pygmy Rattlesnake.

Who needs coffee when you can get a little adrenaline going like that!!!!

Yikes! I don't mind snakes, but being surprised by one like that would probably make me freak out! Looks a lot like the vipers we have around here. There are lots of dry stone walls along the trails near where I live in France, and the vipers love to sun themselves there. I never go hiking without a stick!

Amanda,
I think you are right. We went browsing around and apparently it is a juvenile rat snake (when they are born, reported they are 9-11 inches.....). I do have to say, the animal did give me a startle! We have a "green space" behind our home that carries a creek which meanders down to the Brazos river. I have gotten used to critters, but not quite so close and in my favorite spot in the world!! I figure, like WhiteRabbit says, I will be watching where I put my hand. Repotting is going to take on a whole new aspect, this spring!! Thanks for all of your responses!
