This is my first Orchid that I got and I'm not sure what it is. I'll be honest and say I got it at Trader Joe's - not the classiest of places, but I wanted something to start out with.

The tag said "Dendrobium Orchid". The flowers are getting droopy and I'm trying to figure out what type of orchid it is to see if it's ok

Thank You I hope this Orchid comes out ok, then I'll try something nicer.

It more than likely belongs to the species Den. phalaenopsis, which is commonly available in big box stores, etc. Check out this site -- they provide orchids along the east coast --

The flowers are getting droopy due to change in humidity -- I'm sure your home in Mass. is dry now due to heating.

Thanks for the site I'm looking at it now.

And I didn't even think about the humidity!

A tray of water under it. There are humidity trays you can get. They have a screen that the plant sits on so it is not sitting in the water. It helps make the air around the plant humid. Keep the chid away from heat registers. There are deflectors you can buy for those too. If price is a problem on that, then just a saucer with gravel in it and water will help. Hope this makes sense . Also if you have a bathroom window with good light, that would be the perfect place. Humidity is better in bathrooms.

Oh, that's a good idea - I didn't know about humidity trays. I'll have to look for those.

Sadly, our bathroom does not have a window even, though I did think of that.

It will be ok for the pot and plant to sit in water?

No, the plastic screen holds it up out of the water. The water sits under it and provides evaporative moisture. You can also put aquarium gravel in a plant saucer and then fill with water. The plant sits on the gravel and does not get soaked. Sitting in too much water isn't good for most plants. You can get the trays from orchid supply houses online. The other items should be easy to find locally. I started out with the saucers and gravel. Now I have trays. Love them but don't know that it would be worthwhile for just one orchid. CArol

Ok, I misunderstood the first part. I'll go looking for gravel as that seems the easiest right now Thank you
