No, the plastic screen holds it up out of the water. The water sits under it and provides evaporative moisture. You can also put aquarium gravel in a plant saucer and then fill with water. The plant sits on the gravel and does not get soaked. Sitting in too much water isn't good for most plants. You can get the trays from orchid supply houses online. The other items should be easy to find locally. I started out with the saucers and gravel. Now I have trays. Love them but don't know that it would be worthwhile for just one orchid. CArol
