Steve, you are absolutely right. The picture that I posted is Bc Maikai. When I uploaded the picture it was from thumbnails of recent pictures with no names on them yet. Because they do look similar, I clicked on the wrong thumbnail, thus the wrong picture.

Thanks for correcting me and I apologize for the error.

There have been many a snafu in mistaken identities from both AOS and the large botanical gardens. I know Selby had a big one years ago.

When CITIES first came into play there were many species and natural hybrids that were simply misidentified orchid species on export and import permits to get into the states. And without a flower...well, how do you tell an endangered plant from one that is a dime a dozen?

I think we should think up a name for this beauty. The grower can put a tag on it and know that everyone had a hand in coming up with a name...

As this thread continues it brought up a question in my mind. Why is the identification of orchids so dependent on having a nametag that can easily be lost? It seems a pretty haphazard method of identification. It seems that this is a problem in need of a solution. Just my humble thoughts.

And by the way, thanks to all of you with your comments and suggestions.

Purerookie, that is a good question. Everyone needs a name. Can't go thru life with, hey you. Orchid lovers like and need names to their plants. A name is required if you are going to have it judged in an AOS show for awards. And that is a reason some people grow then to see if they can grow an awarded orchid. The serious orchid grower does his research and deals with only reputable vendors. The tag is affixed to the pseudobulb not just stuck in the pot. Other I know also include another tag in the bottom of orchid in their collection just in case a tag comes of, whether on purpose or accident. The specific description on a given orchid can usually identify an orchid however, the difficulty comes into play with hybrids and their crosses unless it is a mericlone. Hope this helps but just my opinion.
