Spider orchid? Male
Default Spider orchid?

Hi folks.

Another plant from Gran is flowering and naturally, I have no idea what it is. I'd loosely guess dendrobium and father referred to it as a spider orchid. A fairly large plant as you can see. The flowers face downwards so the photos are looking up at them.

For some reason the colours are better on the photo I took after dark than ones taken during daylight hours. And the night shots were crisper. I might have to remember that trick.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Aus.

PS - some further research makes me think it could be an "antelope" or possibly a "spatula" orchid. I came across two photos - at the top of this post - which look very similar but they don't appear to have settled on a name:

Definitely not a dendrobium spectabile click here- IOSPE PHOTOS , and not a spider orchid since spider orchid is also known as brassia- and has bulbs. i believe its a dendrobium hybrid but from cochilodes click here- Dendrobium cochliodes | Orchids Online
Anyway i hope you'll find the exact name of it. Nice breed you got there. the best way to get the nicest breed is to look for more twist in it... the more twist the better ones!

Happy blooming!!!

It's one of the antelope Dendrobiums, probably a hybrid and then very difficult to name, but possibly a color form of Dend. discolor.

Thanks very much for the help.

It certainly has a lot in common with den. discolor (now Durabaculum undulatum). Where it gets suspicious is the "rippled" antlers on the discolor - mine aren't rippled so I suspect if Den. discolor is involved it's a hybrid. A good pic of the discolor:

After looking at a few hundred photos and doing innumerable searches I think I may have come across something. Den. tangerinum perhaps?

What do you folks think?
