Default Another unidentified species

I received such great help last time from Eric and Mike that I thought I'd try again. Here's another plant that I have named only as an unidentified species without any other info. It was given me by a friend who I believe collected it somewhere in Central America many years ago.

I should add that it is small with very thick terete leaves, partially visible in the photo, that are deeply grooved and which grow from a very small pseudobulb.

Ramon,
The leaves on this are 3-4 inches long, nor is the lip at all similar to Dend. prenticei. I doubt very much, in fact, that it is a Dendrobium. I'll try to get some photos and post them tomorrow.

Hi Ron,

I'm not sure what it is, but it reminds me of some of the Maxillarias I've seen photos of, many of which come from Mexico and Central America.

In any event, it is a beautiful looking bloom.

Ron, I think that I agree with dgenovese that it looks like a Maxillaria especially as it appears only to have one flower per spike. The colouring reminds me of Maxillaria rufescens but when you tell me that the leaves are "terete" then it is definitely not that species. The terete leaves suggest something akin to Maxillaria jurgensii from Brazil but the flower is too open and not dark enough to be that species.Sorry I cannot help further. Perhaps OrchidEric will give us the answer.

Dear Ron,

The mystery plant is Homalopetalum kienastii. A miniature species endemic to Mexico.

Hope that helps, Eric

Amazing, Eric. I didn't think it was a Maxillaria. Neither the plant habit nor the flowers seemed right for that.
