Default Unidentified species

Anyone have any idea of what this is? I have no record of where I got it, where it's from - only have it marked as unidentified species. Ought to be a real challenge for somebody.

Ron, I cannot see the column clearly but the colouring of the flower makes me think that it is some form of Oncidium. Does the column have "wings/auricles" near the apex. Whatever it is, it is a pretty orchid.

That lip is too cool! It looks like it is made of wax! Love the coloring! Sorry, I am of no help.

I don't have a clue either Ron, but it's a beauty. I love the color and the lip. Maybe a couple pictures of the rest if the plant might help identify the species. Noids are great!!

I would enjoy seeing a photo of the entire plant as well; what size are the flowers?

Dear Ronald,

Your plant is Lophiaris lindenii, one of the so-called mule-eared Oncidiums. It may also be found under a later synonym: Oncidium retemeyerianum. Some authors include Lophiaris is a very broadly defined Trichocentrum - Kew/RHS/AOS - but that is stretching the concept of Trichocentrum too far for me.

Hope that helps, Eric

Hey Eric,
Thanks very much. That is great and kudos to you for the identification. I've got a couple more that I'll be putting up in the next few days.
