is this a type of orchid? (the coin diameter is 2.5cm)

It is definetly an orchid. From Malaysia this is undoubtedly a seedling Dendrobium.

probably a dendrobium, but it looks like a mature plant, not a seedling. i wouldn't expect it to get much bigger.

I agree. Looks remarkably like D. laevifolium. If so, that is a mature plant.

It is not D. laevifolium which has glossy leaves, pseudobulbs without angles, and does not grow in Malaysia.
