Alaskagirl, you want some local orchid shops...let me tell you!

First, that address for Tom Ritter (who has an amazing collection of orchids through about 5 greenhouses) is not correct. He is now located in Kissimmee. His new address is:
2494 Neptune Road (yahoo maps should give good directions) They are also called Tropical 1 Orchids, so if you google them you might not find it under Tom Ritter. He has mainly vandaceous types, but gets in others like oncidiums, some paphs, and others. Even if you aren't into vandas alot just going there to walk around is awesome. It's not too bad a drive from WP either, just I-4 to turnpike for about 10 miles. Only takes about 25 minutes.

Next, there is one little shop off of 17-92 that is pretty good too if you don't want to drive too far. I can't think of the name off the top of my head right now....darn! Sorry! I can tell you though that if you came down Aloma and turned Left on 17-92 it is a little bit before HW-50 (E. Colonial) on your right hand side. It is a small little place set back but on the road it says bonsai, orchids, and tropical plants on a sign. It is in between Virginia and 50. I will think of the name and post it for you when I remember.

There is also World of Orchids in Kissimmee not too far from Tom Ritter/Tropical 1, but I have never been there. Jackie tells me it is really good and I have seen some really nice $7 plants she picked up there, so I would suggest them too. They also have lots of supplies from what she tells me.

Then, out in Clermont (another turnpike experience) is SmileysOrchids. Here is here link:
index
Her stuff is amazing, she is soooo nice and she will take you through the green house on a personal tour. It smells divine in there. Just give her a call to make sure she will be there. She has alot of vandas too,but lots of other cool/rare/unique things too. She had this one catt. that Jackie got that smelled like heaven! I got a couple scented vandas there too.

And last to tell you about, every September, the Central Florida Orchid Society hosts an orchid auction at Leu Gardens. It is on Sept. 20 from 9AM until plants run out. Here is their link:
Central Florida Orchid Society
Some of the stuff can get pricey for rare or large plants, but they usually have stuff in flask, seedlings, in bloom, out of bloom, etc. I got some really cool hybrid flasks there a few years ago.

Whew...hope this helps. Also, I frequent the Lowes by my work (Sandlake and John Young) and they get some cool stuff at times. They have some pretty catts. and paphs right now, but many are not labeled or not in my price range (for a non labeled plant). Generally about $15-$30. However, You can get 2 for that price from the growers (or more) and better quality!

Have fun! Any questions, feel free to PM me. I love to talk orchids!

Nice find!! I got my paph from Home Depot too. Mine was more than yours however.. ($24.99 on sale) It a Hysinying Ruby Cherry #2 x Paph Tryon purchased this past December down here in SE Florida.

I bought it with what had to be a new bloom which lasted until end of March beg of April if I recall right. I was absolutely beautiful. But it hasn't rebloomed yet. In fact it it is rather treading time.. not doing too much of anything other than a sprit of growth the last couple of weeks. I'm very ancious for it to bloom again. I just love them and want to find a color assortment of the slippers. But I'll have to look harder for some good sales at these prices. I have to get better at taking pix of my blooms. I didn't take any at the time, I will next time.

Enjoy!

WOW Jenn! Thank you!! I'm going to try and check out a few of those places this weekend. The place you mentioned on 17-92 is right down the street from where I work, and me & my H.R. lady (another orchid enthusiast) are actually planning on going there next Tuesday during lunch Haha.

It appears to be a member of section Cochlopetalum, the sequential flowering Paphs. As to what the actual species/hybrid is, I wouldn't be able to tell without a picture of the open flower and even then it might be difficult...

Oh! I just realized that there were more pages to this thread! I would say judging by the pics that it is probably a Pinocchio but it could be many things.

Wow Alaska adding more greenhouses to the list, you will be one busy enthusiast. The orchid shop on 17-92 is a great place to purchase different types of orchids. I bought a few paph's, cattelya, and dend from them. They are pricey but really nice ones. I fell in love with the phal tree in the back room, not sure if it is still available, costly but the coolest. If I remember correctly they get there shipments in on Thursdays, not to mention if you have a request they can contact their vendor and see if they have it...very nice owners.

Jenn correct me if I am wrong but Tropical 1 has some crazy hours, remembering when Dave (Oscarman) was here in Orlando we were going to go by there but the hours seem more like banker's hours. If you do decide to stop by Alaska give them a call and check out there hours. I hear it's a really nice working greenhouse, you will be in total Ahhhhhhhhh

Enjoy your orchid fun filled weekend.

Just a quick update! This weekend I made it to World of Orchids and Tom Ritter's (Tropic 1). World of Orchids was okay, a bit rundown. They had a pretty nice indoor tropical jungle, but it too could have been better taken care of. In their shop, they had some VERY nice Paph's! You could get little seedlings for $7, so I picked up a Paph. Fanaticum.

Next we headed over to Tom Ritter's. I didn't call before going there, we just decided to stop by. The greenhouse was open and we could walk around as we pleased. It was AMAZING. They had TONS of just about everything. I picked out one very cool Oncidium in bloom for $25, don't remember the name though as I'm at work right now. Will post pics later. I went up to pay and was talking to the lady that worked there and she gave me another Onc for free! YESSS! Everyone that worked there came up to talk to me & my boyfriend before we left. VERY nice people. I'm definitely going back

I am glad you had such a good time at Tom's. I like them alot too. Sometimes you get the daughter to help you and she is more generous, and sometimes mom comes along and she is not as generous...lol! Anyway, I haven't been to World of orchids yet,but I plan on going soon for some cheapie seedlings.

As for Tom Ritter/AKA Tropic 1, yes they do keep bankers hours! No sundays (although I notice that with most nurseries in central florida), and close around 5 or 6 daily. Other then that, it is great that you can roam the greenhouses freely.

Let us know how the 17-92 one goes! I haven't been there in over a year and it is just a couple miles from me! Gotta get there soon!
