My Unidentified Yellow/Purple-lip orchid also looks like this one
My unidentified yellow/purple-lipped orchid also looks like the one pictured at this URL:
Cattleya orchid at our backyard #2 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Which they say they have identified as:
Blc Ablaze Medal 'U Emperor' (Blc Toshie Aoki x Blc Gold of Tainan)
However, they didn't know what their orchid was, so it may be the one they identified, or it may be the same hybrid as my unidentified orchid, or it may be an Alma Kee 'Tip Malee'!
However, the blooms in that photo look like they have a small flash or blush of orange at the tips of the sepals and petals, which mine does not.

Rsc. (syn. Blc.) Alma Kee was registered in 1975 by M. Miyamoto Orchids Inc. The clone 'Tipmalee' (all one word, as I found while researching) was awarded an AM/AOS in 1986 with the following description:
"Eleven flowers and four buds on four inflorescences; flowers large, well- formed, golden yellow, with beautiful contrasting velvety red-purple lip veined with gold, reflecting the Cattleya dowiana in its parentage; substance superlative; flowers borne on strong upright stems well above the foliage." The natural spread on the judged flower was 15 cm. (just under 6 inches).
Hope this helps you out with your quest for identification.

Many of the Toshie Aoki clones have that flare of red on petals and sepals. Gosh, once I start looking, it is amazing how many hybrids there are with C. dowiana as a major contributor, many yellow flowers with red/purple lips. Whew!

That description and the photos I have seen of Rsc. Alma Kee 'Tipmalee' sound and look exactly like the plant I have, despite the fact that I truly don't believe that was the name on the original tag from Hausermann's.
However, as I said, I could probably tag it as an Alma Kee 'Tipmalee' and no one would know the difference.
Thank you jeanne and everyone for your help. A friend recently suggested that I send an email to Hausermann's asking if they might be able to identify it from the sketchy information I have. I'll try that, and see how they respond. I'll post the results here (if there are any results).

Nah, I don't think it's an Alma Kee... its lip is a little open and the petal isn't as wide. But it is beautiful indeed!

Identity of the Blc from Hausermanns
Hi Everyone,
Just registered and logged in and noticed we need a name for a hybrid purchased from us many years ago. It appearst to be is Blc. Miya's Glow x Blc. Helen Pastushin.
I am very new to the forum but I will try to post an old picture to compare. I do not know if I did this correctly, I will have to check back in the forum. Please be patient (Forum Newbie) Lynn Hausermann
