Default Help Needed with "Onion Orchid" Possible ID

A number of years ago, I bought an orchid from Lowe's that was mounted on cork. If memory serves, the orchid had p-bulbs that were about the size of a nickel or a marble - they were pretty round in shape but came to a slight point that faced away from the mount. They had two strap-like leaves maybe 4" - 6" long that grew out of the pointy end. Reminded me of small green onions.

I don't remember the flowers exactly but I think they were white and maybe somewhere between nickel and quarter size in bloom. I remember the blooms as being VERY fragrant! This is the only photo I have of it and it's not very good... (click on it to see a larger version)

The orchid I am talking about is in the middle of this cropped photo, partly hidden behind some metal hangers.

The plant grew well in the Florida weather without much fuss and bother from me as I pretty much ignored it most of the time. I am thinking it was Encyclia tampensis- like but I don't remember the flowers looking like those and I think the p-bulbs of that Encyclia get larger then the ones I've described.

That's it! When I moved a few years back, I gave the plant away (along with others) as I didn't think I would have the time or space for it. Little did I know I would be a couple plants short of 300 now and, even with all those, I would really miss this plant.

Any help appreciated once again!

Could be a Maxillaria? It's really hard to guess based on that picture

Not the best picture, but I'm fairly certain it is an Encyclia. Hard to say which one it is, without a flower description. They are usually pretty fragrant, and have somewhat small flowers. I have some pretty big Enc. tampensis, and the p-bulbs seem to stay about the size of the one in your picture. I would have to doubt Maxilaria, due to the fact that the p-bulbs of the Max. tend to stack outward, away from the mount....rather than clustering around it tightly, like an Encyclia.

could be encyclia, the leaf shape looks like my encyclias, but my encyclias *seem* to have broader leaves. I also can't tell if there are two leaves or just one single leaf from the p-bulbs in that picture

I think most of us think of it as an encyclia. Which one could be anyones guess without a clear picture. There are so many beautiful ency. out there, take your pick.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like I am thinking in the right direction.

The photo I posted was a scanned and extremely cropped 35mm slide from the early '90s of my orchid enclosure at the time and the 40 or so plants I had hanging in it. I now really wish I'd have taken more plant photos.

Strange as it may seem, I lost interest in orchids shortly after that photo, with the job travel and family demands really kicking in - and gave away all my plants. Now I find orchids to offer a nice break from the stresses and the info overload of day to day life.

Gin - I'm going to pick up an Encyclia bractescens as it does look close in structure to what I remember of the plant I had (at least by the photos I could find online).

Funny that I can remember the fragrance well but not the flower...

It also lists, below it's description, a number of other encyclias
Here is their complete list - Encyclia at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate
In fact, here is a list from orchidwire.com of Encyclia Vendors - OrchidWire : Orchid Genus : Encyclia : Vendors

I would say it is Encyclia bractescens. It is the only Encyclia with that growth habit that would common enough to get at a box store. It is a common species in eastern Mexico and as been imported by the thousands. The flowers are very fragrant but the lip is pink, not white.
