A note about vanilla: most will not bloom until the top of the plant has nothing to cling to. Put a pole beside them to allow them to climb, but let them grow up until they bend back over to get blooms.

Thank you for the helpful tip. I did repot it into a new pot with a pole behind it. Maybe next year it will be tall enough to be bending over and I might get some flowers. Thank you again to everyone!

maitaman just refreshed my memory...which just ain't what it usta be

When I was originally researching this plant, I found some stuff saying that the plant had to grow at least 15 ft AND bend back on itself before it would bloom. In my experience with this one, it did bend back before blooming but it didn't have to reach that enormous height

Jenn, I'm looking forward to seeing what yours looks like in a few weeks

Gorgeous plants, all! I got one earlier this spring and it took a tumble off of the shelf in my gh. Hasn't been the same, since. Also, mine is potted in a bark mix. I think I will try something with a little more "soil". You guys make this look easy....

Hi Vanessa

I know of folks who have a piece of the same plant I have and it hasn't done well. I really believe it's the specific combination of African Violet Mix and the tree fern totem for it to grow on.

What exactly is a tree fern pole? Somehow I must have missed that part. I just have a little bamboo stick behind mine but i know it is too small. All I had at the time though... I would like to get something better quickly before it attaches to the pole. Thanks!

The copy and paste only gives me their home page but...click on this link, then in the left column look for Tree Fern products. Scroll down to the totems, I use the 2 ft sections.

OFE International Web Page

When the plant needs more than the 2 ft, my husband drills a hole down the center of the top on the existing totem and the same type of hole in the new totem, then uses a small dowel to connect them. Once they're together, we just lash the new section to the existing wooden pole that's there for support.
