ID and deciphering a tag!
Greetings -
The tag is handwritten in pencil, and *looks* like Chondrothunche candidas 'Cole' (yeah, I know!).
I have a suspicion that it might be Chondranthes (Chondrorhyncha x Cochleanthes), both species I've never grown (or maybe seen, even).
A couple of photos are attached, showing the foliage and the flower. I saw others at a show this weekend, and the pendent flower seems typical (or maybe our south Louisiana heat was giving it the vapors).
Can anybody speculate? Translate?
Thanks - Nancy

Chondrothunche candidas 'Cole' looks like a species name with a cultivar distinction.
I have never heard of a hybrid named as a species before.
I have also found in Intergeneric Orchid Hybrid Abbreviations
Chondrobollea - Chdb = Bollea x Chondrorhyncha
Chondrothyncha - Chdrh - species
I have never heard of Chondrothunche before
But I'd love to know if someone else knows more about this.
I do see the Cochleanthes influence in your flowers as I have a few Cochs (species and hybrids) of my own.
Check out these past threads to familiarize yourself with some of the Cochs out there -
Cochleantes White Knight
Cochleanthes speciosa
Cochleanthes Marginata
Amazing Cochleanthes Amazing
There is a species called Cochleanthes candida - IOSPE PHOTOS
Yours look more like a hybrid of some sort ...

It might be Chondrorhycum candida 'Cole' as I found in this grex of this hybrid - Chondrorhycum amasonica 'Paleface' x candida 'Cole' - Chondrorhycum amasonica 'Paleface' x candida 'Cole' : Orchids Of Los Osos, Home of the Fragrant Orchids
but I could not find that specific Chondrorhycum.
Yours might be a hybrid with Chondrorhycum candida 'Cole' as one of it's parents
I can't find any info for Chondrorhycum. ( but then again, I haven't done an 'extensive' search on it yet)

Hi Dorothy - wooohooo, you must be a detective in your non-orchid moments. That genera Chondrothyncha looks sooo close to what is on the tag (if the writer had penmanship like mine).
I appreciate your digging - there's some good places to start digging, for sure.
I will admit that I've only vaguely heard of some of the genera you listed, and not at all of the others (including Chondrothyncha).
I will poke and pry, and see what I can turn up.
Where do you find this?
Thanks - Nancy

Nancy, your plant is Cochleanthes candida 'Cole'. this plant has also been classified as a Chondrorhyncha or Chondranthes, and there is some debate over whether it's a species or a naturally ocurring hybrid.
Chondrorhycum, Chondrothyncha and Chondrothunche are all mis-spelled versions of the name Chondrorhyncha.
Dorothy, Nancys plant is one of the parents of the plant you linked to. the other parent is Cochleanthes amazonica, the name Chondrorhyncha amazonica is considered invalid.
soilyfingers, while your plant is similar, it is not the same. yours is a cross between Cochleanthes amazonica and a Pescatoria.

Thank you lambelkip. I think I see where I read wrongly. Yes, tags are confusing when so many crossings are made. I'm a new member of an Orchid Society and have MUCH to learn!!! You helped me learn. Thanks. Soily

Thanks, Kip - ya know, I have found names mis-spelled on machine-printed tags, so I suppose one that is hand written should not be a surprise. Makes you just love program that are "fuzzy search" friendly.
Regards - Nancy
