My condolences. I wish more people would use designated drivers, cabs, or even call a friend instead of driving drunk. It changes too many lives in one drastic second, and its almost never the drunk that dies, or gets seriously injured.
Yes the white things are roots, no you don't need to trim them right now, maybe when its time to re-pot, spent flowers may drop off on their own, once the whole spike is done and I usually wait until they dry out to trim it back to just above where it comes out of the plant.
Give your boys an extra hug. Try not to let things pile up on you, and ask for help from family and friends when you need it, that's what they're there for.
