What is this dendrobium?

Hello everyone,

For my first message on the forum, let me wish you a happy New Year!

For Christmas, my mother offered me an orchid (as I love orchids and collect them, it’s a good idea!)

Here’s my question: I think the baby is a Dendrobium, but I don’t know more about it; I have several Dendrobiums, their cultural needs are quite variable…
The only thing I know is that the flowers are white and don’t last very long.
I can’t find anything similar on the net, especially with the red roots (look like my Eria!). could you help me identify my new guest?

First, Welcome!

Without flowers, I think an ID is impossible. It looks quite healthy, so chances are good that it will "give your more information" (like flowers) in time. Can you perhaps get some information about its origins from the person your mother got it from? If not, I would suggest trying for "moderate" conditions through the winter - well drained medium, moderate watering (let it get near dryness but not completely dry), intermediate temperatures, and fairly bright. In spring, when new growth starts, increase watering. So these would be sort of "compomise" conditions, then make adjustments as needed.

I’ve tried to phone the grower to have more informations, but I haven’t reached him yet.
I live in New Caledonia, a small French Island north east of Australia; we’ve got wonderful conditions for orchids, but no really professional seller; they import orchids and most of the time, the tags are lost.

I know it’s impossible to precisely identify an orchid without flowers, but I hoped with the foliage and the color of the roots, I could have the kind of subspecies it belongs to.

As you say, I will provide classical care and check its comportment, and adjust until blooming!
