Is this an Oncidium crocidipterum? Female
Default Is this an Oncidium crocidipterum?

Hello, new here

I'm a botanical artist/illustrator and I've been collecting orchids to learn about them and illustrate them.
I bought this one today and didn't realise that the label was from another orchid!. It's a supermarket orchid, I know they don't make much effort to care for them or properly identify them, but I saw it there and thought I have to take it home!

Anyways, the app Picture this makes a terrible job for me at least, and says it's a Turtle shell orchid, which is not.
in Plants of the World Online | Kew Science found the oncidium crocidipetrum and think this could be it, my books only show oncidiums in general.

I'm doing illustrations of orchids with information about care and also about their morphology, so I need as accurate info as possible.
It'd be amazing if anyone could help me.

That is a hybrid of some sort.

When searching for species photos, orchidspecies.com is a good site. Here's the oncidium:

I agree with Ray, it's almost certainly a hybrid.

If you are trying to illustrate species you probably wont find them in a supermarket.

If you find a hobbiest or a conservatory that has older plants that are correctly identified, perhaps you could ask them if you could illustrate some of theirs. I bet any serious orchid grower would love to have their plants illustrated ( if they end up with a copy.) I know I would!

Absolutely, my other orquids come from nurseries and they are labeled. This was just a weak moment in the supermarket.
Thank you for the idea! I’d absolutely give them a copy for their generosity!
