[Dusty Ol' Man]

Hi gang. Today I found a small cattleya hybrid plant at the local big box store. The tag is pictured and looks like something is cut off. I looked up the name as written on the tag, but it looks to be incomplete. OrchidRoots gave an incomplete name as a hit. The name it came up with is Cattleanthe Rojo, and the ancestry says C. millerii x Guareanthe aurantiaca. Nothing else comes close.

I Googled the name and found it listed on several sites with variations on the name. I'm just looking for independent confirmation from anyone here. Thanks in advance.

Probably the same thing you found but this pne seems likely to me:

Ctt. Rojo 'Valentine's Day'

It fits the description of small hybrid with clusters of red flowers.

That's what I was thinking. I'll be keeping it in mind, but don't want to assume anything. Either way I'll enjoy the growing. Thanks.

Lc Rojo = Ctt Rojo
It's a primary hybrid of Gurianthe (Cattleya) aurantiaca x Cattleya (Laelia) milleri . So it used to be Laelia x Cattleya (hence Laeliocattleya or Lc), with current nomenclature it's Guaranthe x Cattleya (hence Cattlianthe or Ctt.)

Sunset Valley Orchids may have photos of it on the Web site as Lc. Rojo. Fred Clarke has used it in breeding.

According to Orchidwiz, Lc (Ctt.) Rojo has 80 first generation offspring (F1) of which 23 have been awarded. Of course, many more descendents in subsequent generations. It's one of foundations of miniCatt breeding. (Registered by Rod McClellan Co. in 1965, so it is truly a classic. I expect that it has been remade multiple times)

I saw the Rod McClellan cross on OrchidRoots. I'm looking forward to the blooms. This is a young plant with only three pb and a new growth. Thanks for the Orchidwiz info.
