I ordered a dendrobium and received this. Vanda? Male
Default Ascocentrum or Vanda Miniatum

That's what it is for sure. Is it common?

They were common enough, back in the day when I was active in the hobby. I had one in a teeny, tiny basket. I'm at a loss to know how the mixup happened but ... come on, isn't it the cutest thing ever? Enjoy.

Might be Ascocentrum miniatum (Vanda miniata) or Ascocentrum(Vanda) garayi. Nice!

Once it opens, the lip can be a giveaway, garayi is more orange. But they are really, really close and I see all sorts of contradictory info about the differences. I think too soon to call... not sure that I'd bet my life on differentiating the two even in full bloom.

I'm no longer going to the vendor I have been going to since February because I got a really substandard nearly dead plant for $65.00. He's doing that "Well I sent it," like he did me a favor. I wish there was a vendor harassment thread. Grrr. But they are right, the tiny vandas are kind of fun. Wish you luck!

It just got its first bloom open today. It looks just like the pictures identifying Vanda Miniatum.

It still has 5 unopened blooms, but it's really cute. Mystery is solved anyway. I wonder if this is a really rare species or very common.

Not particularly rare, not that common either , and still quite special. Certainly less common than Den nobile. (And the flowers last a lot longer) It is beautiful! A Vanda that does not take up much space. This "error" was a big win for you.

Ascocentrum (now they're Vanda but...) is used in breeding Vanda hybrids (like Ascocenda) that have more flowers and brighter colors, and also smaller size, than straight Vanda.

Default How and when to repot

I have no idea of how to care for this little guy other than feed and water sparingly. It appears to be potted in soil. My wife likes it so much, she insists I name it after her, so Nancy it is.
