Assorted Paphs From Singapore Botanical Gardens
Default Assorted Paphs From Singapore Botanical Gardens

As I mentioned in some other posts my wife and I visited Singapore Botanical Gardens today. I visit it every time I visit Singapore, and I especially enjoy the National Orchid Garden when i am there. It was major part of my transition from grocery store orchids to more serious growing. In their gift shop they sell clones in test-tubes, and my first visit I purchased a bunch and got a bit more serious about my orchid cultivation techniques.

In the two years since I was there last they have built a new section to the NOG which is a cool weather greenhouse. Not only does this include a ton of plants they couldn't grow in the heat of equatorial Singapore, it is beautifully cool with misters all over the place, so a real refreshing respite from the heat of a Singapore day.

If you love orchids and you can make it to Singapore this is a great way to see some awesome plants (thousands of orchids), but also too cool off in the heat.

As I couldnt find a section suitable for this post I decided i would slide it in here, I couldnt find ID tags on the paphs, (most of the orchids in the NOG are tagged), so I have an excuse to post this now:

Anybody happen to know which ones these are?

PS: If you like food or like orchids, or both, then Singapore is a place you should visit! Some of the best food, at cheap prices, and orchids all over the place. :-)

Oh here is another photo, just cause I can:

Thanks for sharing this garden with us! The Paphs are hybrids (several "bulldog' types and maybe a Maudiae type) . Probably don't have IDs.... impossible to identify if they don't. But they look healthy and happy, and are atttractivey displayed.

They really put on a good show at the NOG. Some of the plants are permanent, and some are rotated out so they always put on a good show. They get most of their adult plants from Toh Gardens which is also an awesome place to visit, acres of orchids. Just don't ask for advice on how to grow them in a different climate as their default answer is "just stick it in charcoal and it will grow". Their conditions are so appropriate that if they forget a plant on a bench or something in a few months it turns into a monster, and the gardeners don't seem to grasp the idea that there are other climates. :-)

I once saw a table of huge plants of the same type I had growing at home from a test-tube clone and I asked them how long they had been there, and the answer was 3 months. My plants was about 3 years at that point and was only a little bigger than my hand. Boy did I feel inferior! To make dendrobiums they take older canes, cut them into single mode segments and then elastic band them into some charcoal and then leave them pretty much, and about 3/6 months later they have a saleable plant. For this northern hemisphere orchid lover the speed they grow here is nothing short of mindblowing.

I'll visit Toh Gardens soon and post some photos. Flowers for as far as the eye can see.
