Dendrobium stratiotes ? Male
Default Dendrobium stratiotes ?

Hi everybody,

This was sold to me as dendrobium stratiotes a while back. I remember it looking very much like it when it flowered earlier this year. I did not take any photos of it at that time.

It is flowing again and this time I payed much more attention. When the buds opened the flowers looked as a dendrobium discolor. Very yellow and brown. I was sure that it was not a stratiotes. At least a week has passed, or maybe even two, and the flowers are starting to look more like a stratiotes than a discolor. It seems they get more and more white than than yellow. Pity I didn't take photos when they opened.

Here is a photo of it right now. The canes in the photos are from a different plant. The canes of this plant measure about 1m and look differently with leathery leaves. What kind of dendrobium is it?

It seems to have the flower conformation of stratiotes, so if it’s not the species (it could be, I suppose), I’d bet that’s one of the parents.

Samurai - interesting!

Photo of the canes. For comparison, to the very left there is a tall version of C maxima. The canes measure about 1m, but I bet they can get much taller and fatter with an older plant. Mine has got just a few canes.

The flowers are still there and they have changed color a little bit more. Too bad I didn't take any picture when they opened, they were so different from now.

For comparison:

It's flowing again from its newest cane. Here's the flower. Soon it will look a little bit different.

It's still holding on to a few flowers from the last time it bloomed. I think it's a great orchid.
