I think its a compact Catt?
Default I think its a compact Catt?

Hello,

First time posting, glad to have found this wondeful resource. Just purchased this today from my local nursery. An elderly lady whom couldnt keep up with her greenhouse anymore, had brought it in. Any ideas? Its ivory with a yellow throat and pink tink to tips of petals. Thank you very kindly!!!

First, Welcome! That is a really pretty flower - and on a compact plant. Good catch! Definitely in the Cattleya group. Other regular contributors are a lot more knowledgeable than I am on what species might be in the mix... I'll take a wild guess that there's some Broughtonia in the hybrid but I could be totally wrong, I leave it to others to weigh in.

Definitely hard or impossible to say what it is. But it is very nice indeed. Reminds me of something like Jackfowlieara of some sort ----- but with rounded sepals as can be seen in the opening pics.

How interesting; I wonder if it's a very old hybrid or if the previous owner had bought it more recently....

Look up the Tucson Orchid Society. They are very friendly, and growing in the desert is different from other places.

Thanks for the replies! There appears to be a couple of dry patches on flower as seen in photo, hope it doesnt indicate virus -flowers appear at the end of their span. Rest of plant is green and appears vigorous without and necrotic leaf spotting or other symptoms.

That's a nice one! The flower shape and the way the buds cluster at the top of a long spike remind me a lot of Iwanagara (now Cattleya) Apple Blossom. I'm guessing that your plant has some similar ancestry, or could even be one of the several white clones of this rather popular hybrid. Many clones have some degree of pink on the edge of the petals, going from fully colored edge to just a hint of pink on the tips.

Camille --- I think they channeled Iwanagra through to Jackfowlieara. Definitely reminds me of 'Appleblossom' (clonal name) from Iwanagara!

I thought it was simply Cattleya now, after the massive renaming and lumping of genera in recent years. Thanks for the correction.

Me too Camille! Wouldn't even be surprised if they do put it under Cattleya later!
