Help reading Tag

I have absolutely no idea who printed the tag or where I purchased this plant. I’m sure I’ve had it for several years. I’ve split it twice. Given away 2 and they’re all in bloom now. Hope the photos help!

Definitely a Brassia. (Abbreviation Brs.) Perhaps someone on the Board recognizes it to determine whether hybrid or species. Doesn't look like there are other genera present, the spidery form and white/green color are pretty much all Brassia (the big ones, not the Ada type)

Excellent in that you mentioned that ES.

I find it very odd in that they put a genus name followed by the abbreviation sp. for a no-id hybrid. That's assuming sp. really stands for species.

SouthPark, people mis-identify plants all the time - I have seen lots and lots of obvious boo-boos especially on plants from other hobbyists (vendors make mistakes, but not usually that blatant) It is not intentional, not malicious, not a character flaw. Ignorance (person didn't know... we're all ignorant about lots of things, nobody is born knowing anything) not stupidity (inability to learn.) Get used to it... You sort out what you can, just enjoy the rest. And it often is an opportunity learn things.

Some people likewise have an extreme tendency to perpetuate name tag errors, even when the correct name is obvious to somebody familiar with that group of plants. I know people in different plant societies who will not correct their tags because "that's what it came with."

Roberta - it is true that wrong names do exist on tags for various reasons. And if it is detected, then it's ok to just mention it - regardless of whether the tag gets updated, changed, or not.

It certainly doesn't mean that somebody is stupid, or ignorant, malicious etc. Cannot judge books by covers. We observe, and observe adequately and very thoroughly before making any serious judgements/opinons. Depends on situation of course.

I won't think badly about somebody that keeps the same wrong tag name even after telling them about it. It's only for cases where people sell orchids with majorly wrong tag name ----- that can be a problem.

• Poor eye sight
• Less than perfect handwriting
• Unfamiliarity with less than common names/varieties/clonal names
• A desire to have only personalized labels in the plants (thus re-writing everything).

Having rented greenhouse space from a lady with all of the above, I have seen my share of labels with 'innovative' information.
