this cattleya has been with us for ages but have never known what it is? Could the experts kindly help me out.

Lol. It does look similar to mine only mine has been in bad shape after some scale infestation but it still bloomed for me. Mine is bifoliate though I think. The one with the flower although has only one leaf. On research I found c mendelii look like this but that's supposed to be unifoliate. Maybe its a hybrid. God knows.

It's definitely a hybrid... that's what makes identification fairly impossible - there are so many hybrids that look similar. Given the complexity of years and many generations of Cattleya breeding, there are just too many variables. Yours has a subtle flare on the petals, but that still isn't enough to get an ID. So just enjoy.
