Welcome to the Orchid Board! Thank you for showing the photos of the plant in habitat.

Fred Clarke owns Sunset Valley Orchids in California. He specializes in Catasetum. Try sending him photos at fred.clarke@att.net .

Reason I asked is I rely heavily on IOSPE and it specifically refers to growing on a palm tree. I just didn't think the flowers were conclusive enough but I would say it's at least a 50/50 probability.

Cool so the palm tree is at a steep angle?

lucleus ------ there's definitely uncertainty about that particular orchid is - as it appears so far to have never been seen before by anybody else but you - which is pretty awesome (if that's true).

This reminds me of the famous cliche saying "The likes of which we have never seen before"

Was that photo taken back in 2006 or before? And - is it possible for you to go back to that place to see if it is still there?

Also - avoid revealing location (GPS coords etc) - otherwise you could start up something like a PokeMon Go thing.

Now - if you all exuse me - I've have to book some flight tickets.

Hi congratulations for the beautiful photos and this interesting discovery.
I live in Campo Limpo Paulista which is not very far from the area you indicated.
I also have a passion for nature and photography.
I have been thinking about visiting the Pantanal for some time and now I am even more convinced that it would be a beautiful adventure.

I have done a bit of research into this one, it is certainly an odd specimen whatever it is! It is definitely part of subsection Convergentes of Catasetum, but that is as far as I can get with confidence. I am 75% sure it is Catasetum fimbriatum but I can't say for certain, the lip shape is different from a typical C. fimbriatum, but there is a good chance it is just natural variation.

This all sounds very cool, next time (after Covid!), when I go back to the location, I'll try to find more specimens and photograph them ...
Thanks for all your help and interesting input.
