The first one looks like it would be the Laeliocattleya (with one of the Laelia Section Crispae in the parentage).

The second plant looks to have Sophoronitis and Cattleya in the parentage.

The third is most definitely Cattleytonia.

Tags? Some orchids come with tags you say?
What a novel idea. I shall have look about for some these legendary "tagged" orchids.

Seriously, I have close to thirty orchids and maybe four names to go with them. Just make up names I do. The orchids below are Puck, Grandpa Vanda, Big Bubba and Lil' Football Grass Top; respectively.

with your "tag" situation

Aaron, you are too funny! You better keep an eye on those guys. Looks like Big Bubba has been taking Grandpa and Lil Grass Top's share of the food! That is one big plant!

Mahon, could you please explain to me how you made the ID on these plants. (I need to learn this) What are the identifying characteristics for Sophoronitis and Laelia (as far as leaf and cane/bulb)? What do you mean by Cattleytonia? I have grown orchids for 35 years but never paid much attention to the names until I joined OB. I only know the basics. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Aaron,

Here's a few identities...

1. Oncidium ampliatum (syn. Chelyorchis ampliata

2. ...a Vanda, you know more about it than I do!

3. ...looks like it might just be Oncidium sphacelatum

4. Maxillaria tenuifolia

Susie,

Well, right now, there are some mix-ups with the Laelia. They've been split into genera like Hadrolaelia (which was now lumped to Sophronitis), Hoffmannseggella, Dungsia, and others. But what people have known as Sophronitis is the parent I am referring to, such as Sophr. cernua.

The bulbs are short, slender at the rhizome and wide in the middle, with a single leaf. Using Sophronitis in a hybrid will usually produce much smaller, compact plants with thick bulbs, such as the one you have pictured.

With Laelia Section Crispae, now included into Sophronitis (as far as I know), the bulbs are much slender. So in the first picture, you had a tag with 'LC.', which is Laeliocattleya (Laelia x Cattleya), the slender bulbs would have narrowed it down to that plant.

Cattleytonia is a generic hybrid of Cattleya x Broughtonia. The abbreviation is usually 'Ctna.'

Honestly, this is exactly what I love about this site.
Is that what NOID means? Wow, I learned something, too! Thanks!

Hi Vanessa! Yes, NOIDs are No ID. I learned that too not long ago here on OB.

Pat, you are amazing! Thanks for help with the ID. So now I know #1 is LC Carolyn Reid, #3 is Ctna Mem Henry Goldberg, and #2 is a NOID (sophronitis). I may be able to ID it better when it blooms. Also thanks for explaining Ctna, too. I have a couple of those and never knew what that meant. Thank you very much!

Susiep,
That "thing" for my avatar is a 38" redfish. Well the head actually. It is there to remind me that I used to go fishing back before I got into orchids.
