What's this?? Cattleya, Guarianthe or something...
Default What's this?? Cattleya, Guarianthe or something...

Hi there,
I got this plant from a friend after his dog played with it
It started to recover and now it is growing. At first I thought it would be some bifoliate Cattleya, but now those flat new growths make it very different from the other bifoliates I know
Please let me know your opinion!
Thanks

There's no way of even beginning to guess what it might be until it blooms. Then, it may be possible to make some guesses as to what some of the ancestors might be, but unless it's a species with very distinctive characteristics, exact ID is probably impossible. In any case, it appears to be recovering quite well (Congratulations!) so enjoy the surprise when it blooms!

Default Identification

Hi:
The new growth look like cymbidium but the older leafs look like cattleya's so I am thinking it probably is a monopodial cattleya.
Good luck !

Rhonda, Cattleyas are all sympodial (grow along a rhizome)... Tango's plant looks to very much like it is in the Cattleya group, with two new growths. That's what they look like when they first develop, the relatively long pseudobulbs and leaves differentiate later. Beyond that, it's one of a huge group. Since some of the old growths have 2 leaves (bifoliate) and some have one (unifoliate) I suspect that it is a hybrid between the two major groups (but even that is only a "maybe") Just need to be patient. It's a healthy plant... which is great, odds of eventually blooming are good. Looking forward to photos!

Def. not Guarianthe.
Looks like a Laelia or Lc hybrid.
I'd guess the latter.
