Vsol ..... the main thing is to read up a lot on how to pot the orchid before assuming it can be potted or grown a certain way.
For example, if I was a plant, and somebody dunked my head (mouth, nose etc) under-water and keep my head under-water indefinitely ........ I would have serious issues after a short time.
The orchid is the same. Putting regular roots of orchids underwater generally ends up with roots running out of oxygen, and leads to unwanted things happening like that.
The under-water growing techniques for some orchids require some procedures to be carried out/followed - to allow new roots to transition into or adapt to a water environment. That is - new roots gradually extending into water as they grow or meeting the water naturally ----- usually ok. But existing roots dunked in water for a long time ...... usually not ok for most orchids.
And temperature levels, light levels etc need to be ok too. And water in the container probably needs to be replaced every once in a while too.
