Referring to this post: Click Here on the previous page.

One extra note to add is - according to the IOSPE article about goudiana ------ they refer to a 'raised plain/plane' ----- which currently is a source of confusion. The words 'three calli' are a source of confusion too in their description of gouldiana.

Each of the three raised linear structures is one callus, plural calli. A callus is any raised structure. It so happens many orchid lips have calli.

The overall flower shape, and texture are also very different. L. gouldiana is a lot smaller than even a small L. anceps (line breeding has made some of the quite large), it is rounder (sepals are much smaller relative to the petals), and it has a sort of diamond-dusted texture, especially in the light. L. autumnalis is less full than L. gouldiana, has a distinct white patch around the throat, and a different lip shape, and the texture is sort of pearlescent. L. anceps doesn't have the distinct texture that the others do. Also, lip shape is different in each. So you really don't have to get so far into the weeds to ID them. Hybrids within the group can fuzz the characteristics somewhat (look a lot like each other but don't look that much like the species... I have one or two on the Cattleya hybrid page for comparison)

ES ----- that was great! Thanks for adding that. This is all really helping to get a nice picture of distinguishing features. The growers themselves know the differences for sure ------ and just having at least something drawn or photos with little arrows and text pointing to certain distinguishing features (plus the explanations about some terms like you and Roberta included) are just what we need here.

Also adding --- the article about gouldiana here appears to have an issue with description.

"the three calli are actually a flat 3 striped raised plain" needs some clarification, or maybe even correction.

There's so much information at that site (excellent information) - that it's not surprising that they could have just made mistakes with description at the time of typing.

They probably just meant - there are three calli. Each callus is a flat/thin 'slat' or 'keel'. And - looking from 'above', three red/brown lines - coming together in a V pattern.

After reading that L. gouldiana doesn't appear to be found in the wild anymore, and due to the beautiful flowers it has - I ended up acquiring a couple of plants.

One still had a flower on it - with tepals bruised and battered during shipping, but the throat section was still fantastic.

I can add photos of those slats/keels of L. gouldiana. After the bruised tepals are cropped out, still some nice colours and shapes to see.
