Want to replace my favoriye
Default Want to replace my favoriye

Several years ago I had a large collection. We had a freeze for several days which is extremely rare here. I had a heater in the greenhouse but lost power and all of my orchids. I was heartbroken.

Recently I have started to try to start again. This was my favorite. It bloomedlike crazy. But honestly, I kind of blocked everything out of my mind after the freeze and destruction. Does anyone know what it might be and where I could get one?

Welcome to orchidboard, despite the rather sad circumstances which bring you here. I've read a few similar stories here over the years, and in each case it' so heart breaking to lose an entire collection.

It's something in the Oncidium intergeneric group, likely a type of Beallara or Aliceara. Some similiar looking ones I found are variations of Aliceara/Beallara Lunatic Fringe. Does that sound familiar

I agree with that. Looks Beallara to me.

PS And yes, horribly sad. I can see why it took awhile to start up again. Glad you reached the point of starting again. Welcome back!

Similar to Beallara Tahoma Glacier, but not. At least I don't think... too much patterning on top petals. But I could of course be wrong.

PS I've been looking for Beallara Gothic for quite some time. A shout out to me, please, if anyone in US runs across one.

That actually sounds familiar! Thank you so much, it gives me a starting point. I loved that thing, it bloomed like crazy and was so easy to care for.

Massively sorry to hear about such a loss. A rebuild is definitely necessary!

It sounds like you have already begun rebuilding! To cut down on the chance of it happening again - maybe the new green-house can be fitted with some sort of temperature monitoring system that sends an alarm under similar circumstances. Maybe dual or triple heater system (for redundancy) for the green-house and dual diesel generators (for redundancy). Depending on how valuable the collection is that is. But also - to prevent orchids from getting frozen like that.

My collection was not that valuable or unique. I had a generator, but I could not get out the back door due to ice. Like I said, we don’t get freezes like that here and we’re totally ignorant on how to get out my back door. (Flagstone steps and pool deck.

By that point I had too many to bring in the house. I now have a couple of rescued Vandas from a big box store and tons of phals in the house.

It is hot and humid here and one of the rescue vandas has a spike! When I got it, the roots were completely dry and shriveled. I soaked in KelpMax and the new roots are amazing. Most of the old roots never recovered. But the spike I found the other day sure surprised me.

It looks a lot like Bllra. Tropic Lily 'Hilo Space Ship' to me. I’ve seen them periodically on eBay.

There’s a vendor: Bllra. Tropic Lily ‘Chocolate Drop’ Bloom Size | eBay that has a similar variety for sale. I’ve bought from her before and was very happy with the plants. She had Hilo Space Ship available previously so she may be worth contacting.
