Thank you for your thoughts.

The shape and growth habits of the leaves on the orchids you both suggested do match what I can see on my plant.

The person that gifted it to me had forgotten what it was as the tag got lost and the plant ended up being pushed to the back because it wasnt growing for them. They suggested it could be a Den.

Sorry DC no photos of blooms.

Arron...I too thought it could be one of the thousands of Den. hybrids but you did push me to think of Dockrilla.
The Den. Purple Pepper is one I've never heard of, but again leaves are similar and the colour mentioned in the plant name means its another one to consider given the colour of the leaves of my plant.

Other growers have said it needed to be in a smaller pot, despite being in an already small pot. So Ive repotted into a tiny net pot, this gave me the chance to check the roots again after four months. Not good, not many, white, dry looking despite regular small waterings but definitely no worse than when I first got it and the new growths have given me some hope that its trying to recover. Fingers crossed for some new roots now.

I suspect only time is going to give me the answer!
