Blc. Hawaiian Origin Male
Default Blc. Hawaiian Origin

Name on the tag narrowed it a bit. Possibly Blc. Crispin Rosales Behold?

What, specifically does the tag say?

There is a registered cross of Rlc. Hawaiian Origin.

Blc - Brassolaeliocattleya. The brassavola has been reclassified as a rhyncholaelia, hence the new name Rhyncholaeliocattleya - Rlc. Hawaiian Origin.

Hi there jpope.

The title of your post, followed by what you mentioned above - as in mentioning a Blc. Crispin Rosales Behold appears somewhat cryptic.

First - you have a tag name in the title. Then you mention Blc. Crispin Rosales Behold. What does all that imply?

Also, there is a registered cross called Rlc. Memoria Crispin Rosales. But there's no registered cross under the name of Crispin Rosales Behold.

There is a cultivar called Rlc. Memoria Crispin Rosales 'Behold'.

If the tag says Rlc. or Blc. Hawaiian Origin, then it is just indicating that this plant is a hybrid, and also indicating that there is no particular cultivar name or clonal name added to this plant. That is, if a cultivar name had been added, then it would be something like Rlc. Hawaiian Origin 'Abcdefg'.

So, digging a little deeper I found this: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Hawaiian Origin (1997) Kodama RHS (registered)
( Rhyncholaeliocattleya Sweet Anniversary × Rhyncholaeliocattleya Memoria Crispin Rosales )

The flower looks similar to the RLC Crispin Rosales which is the pollen parent. The Rlc/ Blc part threw me off a bit. The label it came with said Blc, not Rlc.

I haven't found a picture on any sites yet to confirm mine is really an Rlc Hawaiian Origin but I don't have any reason to doubt it at this point. Thanks for the help everyone, it pointed me in the right direction. All this sleuthing around is almost as much fun as Orchid growing!

Blc. was the old classification. They did an update.... so now they changed it to Rlc.

Also ... sidenote ... it is Memoria Crispin Rosales. Not Crispin Rosales.

Looked it up... Blc. Memoria Crispin Rosales is one parent of Blc Hawaiian Origin ... so if it looks a lot like Mem. Crispin Rosales, that would be a good reason. The tag is probably correct.

As to your comment that you haven't found a photo to confirm it - forget it!

You'll never reliably ID a hybrid from its flower, because:
  1. There are entirely too many, similar-loking hybrids out there.
  2. Two plants of the same hybrid can have different appearences.
  3. Culture affects appearance. Two of the same clone can take on different form and coloration when grown under different conditions.
