Oncidium ID help! - Orchid Board

4 months ago I bought a Oncidium orchid and a Paphiopedilum as well for 15 dollars! STEAL! The Oncidium has terribly ripped leafs and the Paphiopedilum has no roots so I got him to drop the price since they definitely could be considered rescues. Fast forward I decided to divide them into different sections for multiple plants inside the same pot so it would be promoting more newer shoots. While the Paphiopedilum has been focused on producing roots. The Oncidium has done amazing despite receiving less light then he should have gotten. You can tell this by the leafs. But now on one of the newer growths he has actually flowered and I am tryin to Id this sucker with no avail. It is a foot tall. with thin leafs flowers are 1inch talk and a half a inch wide. With yellow flowers and a maroon marking it is gorgeous but I was wondering if someone knew the species. It is not fragrant as far as I can tell

Congratulations on the rescue! Well done! As far as ID, there are many yellow Oncidium hybrids that look similar. (I think it is probably a hybrid rather than a species) Since so many look alike, you won't get a definitive ID, it's a lovely NOID Oncidium. Enjoy it!

Yes but if a hybrid do you have any idea the species within the cross? I’m hoping to find out what seasons it would bloom if at all possible early. So I was hoping to do it based off the species mix within the cross

Too many possible variations on the theme to determine the parentage. There are many yellow Oncidium species, used in various combinations, and then recombined. "Yellow Oncidium" covers a lot of territory. As far as bloom season is concerned, it's blooming... the plant tells you what its season is. Even if you did know the species in its background, the plant could favor one parent or another, or split the difference, or do something different than all. It's unpredictable even from primary hybrids (cross of two species) and a more complex mix makes it even less predictable. Add to that the factor of cultural conditions, and you'll find that the plant will do what it wants when it wants. Enjoy it any time that it blooms.
