Is this an odontoglossum?
Default Is this an odontoglossum?

I got this orchid at Trader Joe's today and it had no tag. At first I thought it resembled a zygopetalum, but the more I searched online I think it is an odontoglossum. I found a very similar picture and that orchid was called odontoglossum Pacific paranoia other side of cool. Does anyone know if that is what this is?

It’s in the Oncidium alliance. That’s the taxonomic group that includes Odontoglossum, oncidium, miltonia, gomesa, brassia and many other similar genera.

I expect it’s an intergeneric hybrid - a hybrid between two or more genera in this alliance.

I haven’t seen anything similar to that flower but if I was going to look I’d probably start with Miltonidium - which are crosses between Oncidium and Miltonia.

Standard disclaimer - even if you do find an image of someth8ng that looks identical there are so many similar looking hybrids you can never be sure.

Fortunately, the care required for most of the hybrids in this alliance is pretty similar.

Cheers
Arron

There's a popular hybrid, Rhynconia (formerly Odontonia, sometimes mistakenly referred to as Miltonidium) Pacific Paranoia, which looks much like your plant. It is impossible to definitively identify your plant, but I think it is very likely that it is at least a Miltonia hybrid, maybe even Pacific Paranoia (though like Arron said, it is impossible to know for sure).
