NOID outdoor orchid in outer Sunset District of San Francisco
Default NOID outdoor orchid in outer Sunset District of San Francisco

This orchid is in an outdoor pot in the outer Sunset District of San Francisco. Temps range from 40-80, but usually 50-65. Lots of fog and wind.

I want to try to grow this orchid outdoors at my home, that is near where this orchid is growing. The owner does not know what kind it is.

The photos are attachment because, as a beginner to this website, I don't know how to just insert them into the post.

Any help with the type and specific name of this orchid is appreciated.

It's a Cymbidium hybrid. Very common for people to grow these outdoors year round in more temperate areas of the west coast. It's really not feasible to provide any more specific ID than that.

These Cymbidiums can handle temperatures from 29 deg F to over 100 deg. F., and they like sun. (Inland they may prefer a bit of shading in the heat of mid-summer, but in San Francisco, that is not an issue.) Their bloom season is approximately December through April though a few plants may bloom earlier or later. So this is the time when they should still be pretty easy to find since of course they are easier to sell when in bloom. I have seen them in pots on flat roofs, on stairs... pretty much any place where San Francisco residents can find a small corner to grow them. A perfect climate for them.

If you’re looking to buy one, the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate: Santa Barbara Orchid Estate Home Page has a lot of really nice named Cymbidium varieties. A lot of Trader Joe’s also have these in stock right now, but they won’t be named and health may vary.

Take a look at the vendor list from the Pacific Orchid Exposition that took place at the end of February
Sponsor & Vendor List – Pacific Orchid Exposition There are several in the San Francisco area - some do sell Cymbidiums if you want to get one in bloom (and avoid shipping - Cyms that are big enough to bloom are not typically petite). Call or email to figure out which ones do have Cyms, some have other specialties - but if they don't, may also give you reference to other growers in the area.

Default Thanks to everyone

Thanks everyone, and I will certainly follow the advice given here. I will buy a cymbidium soon.
