Has anyone experienced this before? I had a flowered phal stem break off. I popped the stem in water about two months ago. The flowers have slowly fallen and we are down to one. Except! Today I was checking on it and noticed a fresh bud growing out of the tip. What. The. Devil.
Yes, it is the plant's last-ditch effort at survival--if it can't make seeds it will make a keiki. If you can keep it going until a root or two appear, you will have another plant!

Whoa awesome! I'd never heard of propagating from a cut stem on a phal. Thank you!

It looks like a bud rather than a keiki to me, but I'm still surprised this can happen from an inflorescence that was actually broken off of the plant a couple of months ago. Who knew?
It happened to me before... And is happening now.
The spike was broken last year before blooms appear. It was broken but not completely separated, it bloomed last year and is blooming this year too.
