Default New growth on old Phal spike

Hello from snowy Maine! (yes AGAIN)
I got this phal last fall from Baldan's and it came with the old spike cut so as to allow for new growth. It has set dormant all fall and winter. A couple of days ago I noticed that the old spike was sending out a new growth. Is it a keiki or a branch? I'm guessing branch just because it seems to be growing out like a branch might do. But, it doesn't have the "mitten" on the end like a new spike has. This is a first for me and it's fun to see the progress it makes.
Any guesses?
Al

It's a nubbin for now. A keiki will eventually present itself as a leaf (see the photo below) .. You are going to have to be patient and see what develops .. How exciting

Hey... right now with my phals... I'm all about a good nubbin Especially when they turn out to be roots to replace the ones I just had to remove.
